Who Qualifies for Project Choice

How does a person qualify for Project CHOICE?

Medically, a waiver client meets the same criteria as a person seeking admission to a long term care nursing facility. The care coordinator carries out a complete assessment, getting input from the applicant, family members, existing care providers, and the applicant's physician.

Financially, the applicant meets the same Medicaid standard, called the '300% standard, as for Medicaid payments to a long term care facility. The monthly income needs to be under $1,432 (not counting any Longevity Bonus payments), or sheltered through a Miller Trust. A couple is allowed up to $80,000 in convertible resources, while a single person is allowed up to $2,000 in resources outside the home, personal possessions, and vehicle.

Who are the care coordinators?

Alice Rooney, MSW, has spent the last six years coordinating CHOICE waver services in Southeast Alaska. She has some twenty-two years of experience with hospital social work and home health services.

Private pay consultation and care coordination services are also available.
