Alaska Island Community Services a division of SEARHC is a community-based organization dedicated to providing quality health care services to our community and the surrounding areas. Our highly trained physicians, health care professionals, and dedicated staff are focused on providing the right care in the right way at the right time for each patient.
Alaska Island Community Services was established in Wrangell in 1989 under the original name Wrangell Community Services, and began providing Core Mental Health Services to the Community of Wrangell in 1990. Over the next decade the delivery of services expanded to include Disability and Senior Services. In the late 1990's we also began offering a rehabilitative wilderness experience for youth and it has continued to blossom into what is now known throughout the northwest as the Crossings Program.
The early 2000's were good years of growth and prosperity for AICS as additional programs and services became available, including substance abuse treatment and counseling, prevention and public health services and public assistance opportunities to facilitate Medicaid applications and food stamp programs.
In 2004 AICS began offering primary care at the Clinic and obtained competitive grant funding to become a federally qualified health center. In 2007 AICS also began offering Dental Services. Our most recent addition is our Pharmacy Department in 2009. As a federally qualified health center, all of our services are provided on a sliding fee discount scale based on federal guidelines.
On April 1, 2017 Alaska Island Community Services and Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) made their affiliation final. AICS retains its name and will continue providing services as a division of SEARHC.
We currently provide services in a range of communities from Petersburg to Prince of Wales. We operate a small clinic in Gustavus and have providers visit the smaller communities of Point Baker, Port Protection, Coffman Cove, Whale Pass, Naukati, and Edna Bay on a scheduled basis.
The journey from a local behavioral health clinic to a nationally recognized health center has taken us through many challenges and much success. None of it would be possible without the dedicated providers and staff who work tirelessly to ensure that our community receives the highest level of care. We are excited about the opportunities before us to continue to develop the services we provide and the number of communities we are able to reach.
